Sick Slider Turtle Undergoes Ultrasound
This albino red-eared slider turtle presented to Pet Care after several days of decreased appetite and lethargy. Physical examination revealed that the turtle’s body was swollen.

Note the swelling of all four limbs.
Such swelling, or edema, can be seen with decreased protein levels, reproductive problems, liver or kidney disease and imbalances of electrolytes. Bloodwork showed increased uric acid levels which suggested a problem with the kidneys. The turtle was next sedated for an ultrasound exam.
The turtle is closely monitored by our veterinary technicians during the procedure.

The ultrasound revealed an enlarged kidney and free fluid inside the body cavity. The fluid was drained and measurements were taken so that the progression of the disease could be monitored.

Here Dr. McKendry can be seen preparing to measure the size of a kidney.
