Parrots Are Not Chew Toys!

This African Grey Parrot was minding his own business when the family dog decided that he looked like a fun play toy.

Unfortunately the parrot got the short end of the deal and ended up with a comminuted mid shaft fracture of the tibiotarsus bone. Dr Poutous was able to place an intramedullary bone pin and combine that with an external fixation device to stabilize the fracture.

Post op: our friend has the stainless steel pins wrapped up to protect them. As a general rule, bone healing in birds is rapid compared to mammals and this bird should heal within four to six weeks.
