Dentistry – Articles
Did you know that 85 percent of all dogs and cats three years of age and older have some degree of dental disease that requires treatment and/or preventative care? Our companion animals, just like us, have problems with plaque and tartar build-up on their teeth. This is formed by food particles and bacteria, which combine with salivary secretions where the teeth rise above the gum line. If this plaque is allowed to accumulate it eventually causes a variety of health conditions that range from bad breath to root abscesses.
The doctors and staff of Pet Care Veterinary Hospital pride themselves on educating pet owners about dental care and disease prevention. We believe that dentistry should not be an elective procedure but a required component of routine preventative care similar to annual vaccinations, parasite and heartworm testing and dietary counseling. To further assist you in making informed decisions regarding your best friend’s health, the doctors have written the following articles. If you have any questions, please feel free to call us at 757.473.0111. For more information on specific dental problems, please see our Dental Cases of the Month.
