Iguana Bites Off More Than He Can Chew

The owners of Iggie, a one year old iguana, thought their lizard would enjoy a play companion and placed a soft, rubbery yellow toy lizard in its vivarium. The iguana thought otherwise….perceiving this new addition as a threat he did what any lizard would do to protect his environment—he ate the enemy. But as they say sometimes the mouth is bigger than the stomach or maybe we should say in this case the toy is bigger than the butt. Amazingly enough the toy lizard traveled the length of Iggie's intestines from the stomach to the colon and vent area…. where it got stuck.

Iggie with problem

That's when the veterinarians at Pet Care Veterinary Hospital got involved. Iggie was presented somewhat in distress with an arm and tail of the lizard hanging out his behind! Iggie was relaxed with a sedative and Dr. Fisher was able to gently free the little rubbery ‘friend' and pull it out.

Sedated Iggie

The yellow lizard toy appeared no worse for its adventure but Iggie's parents declined to take it home and instead it has become a Pet Care conversation piece. Iggie doesn't miss his rubber lizzie either!
